Trip Styles & Grading Schemes Explained

 
At Wildcat Adventures we are passionate about Adventure Travel on two wheels!
 
In fact we are the only Tour Operator to offer both Motorcycle and Cycle Adventures since 1985.
 

TRIP STYLES

MOTORCYCLE ROAD TOURS:
 
Our Motorcycle ROAD Tours are normally 100% tarmac (there may be less than 5% compacted gravel roads on some tours - please enquire) - suitable for most motorcycles 500cc upwards.  
N.B. We ride KTM, BMW, SUZUKI, HONDA, YAMAHA, etc etc.. and have always welcomed ALL Riders on ANY brand of motorcycle.
 
 
 
 
 
MOTORCYCLE OVERLAND TOURS:
 
Our Motorcycle OVERLAND Tours are a combination of Offroad & Road - suitable for any dual sport motorcycle 250cc upwards (examples CRF250L, DRZ400, CRF1000L Africa Twin, Triumph 800, BMW 800GS, BMW 1200GS, KTM 690-R, KTM 1190-Adventure, etc)
N.B. We ride KTM, BMW, SUZUKI, HONDA, YAMAHA, etc etc.. and have always welcomed ALL Adventure Riders on ANY brand of motorcycle. 
 
 
 
 
 
CYCLE ROAD TOURS:
 
Our Road Cycle Tours are normally 100% tarmac (not withstanding unexpected road works)
 
 
 
 
MOUNTAIN BIKE (MTB) TOURS:
 
Our Mountain Bike Tours are mostly a combination of double and single track, forestry tracks, in some instances no tracks at all!
There are normally some sections of tarmac linking up the offroad.
 
 
 
 

LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY - GRADING SCHEME

Whether you are looking for a physical challenge, or a relaxed holiday we have a trip which will suit your needs.
 
To assist you in choosing your Adventure, when grading our trips we consider the following:
  • Cultural differences in the country you will be travelling
  • Physical Challenge
  • Experience required to participate in the trip safely and comfortably
  • Technical Skills necessary to enjoy your holiday
 
We have 3 Grades of Difficulty -
 
MODERATE (green)
 
DIFFICULT (blue)
 
CHALLENGING (red)
   
We have 9 colour coded sub-Levels enabling us to give you a more precise grading -
 

GRADING SCHEME - Mountain Bike (MTB)

Our Mountain Bike (MTB) Tours are divided into 3 Grades and within each Grade there are 3 Levels.
 
MODERATE (green): Levels 1-3
15-30 miles (24-48 kms) per day
Average ride time 3-6 hours
Total ascent/descent 100-1500 feet
Mostly double track
Short sections easy single track
Several short easy ascents/descents
 
 
DIFFICULT (blue): Levels 4-6
30-45 miles (48-72 kms) per day
Average ride time 6-8 hours
Total ascent/descent 1500-3000 feet
Mostly double track
Some moderate sections of technical single track
Short stream crossings
 
 
CHALLENGING (red): Levels 7-9
45-60 miles (72-96 kms) per day
Average ride time 8+ hours
Total ascent/descent 3000-4000 feet
Some long climbs and descents on a wide variety of terrain, double and single track
Several technical sections
Biking at altitude and heat are considerations
Possible river crossings
 

GRADING SCHEME - Motorcycle Overland

Our Motorcycle OVERLAND Tours are a combination of Offroad & Road - suitable for dual sport (GS and large Adventure/Big Trailie) motorcycles.
 
N.B. We ride KTM, BMW, SUZUKI, HONDA, YAMAHA, etc etc.. and welcome ALL Adventure Riders on ANY brand of motorcycle.
 
Our Overland Motorcycle tours are divided into 3 Grades and within each Grade there are 3 Levels.
 
MODERATE (green): Levels 1-3
You have experience riding easy offroad tracks.
 
 
DIFFICULT (blue): Levels 4-6
You are an experienced rider and confident riding your own motorcycle (with luggage) on tarmac, hard packed gravel, river crossings, and muddy roads.
 
 
CHALLENGING (red): Levels 7-9
You are an experienced rider and confident riding your own motorcycle (with luggage) on tarmac, hard packed gravel, river crossings, and muddy roads.
Generally tours involving challenging terrain combined with high heat or cold temperatures will be graded as CHALLENGING.
 

GRADING SCHEME - Motorcycle ROAD

Our Motorcycle ROAD Tours are normally 100% tarmac (there may be less than 5% compacted gravel roads on some tours - please enquire) - suitable for most motorcycles over 500cc.
 
N.B. We ride KTM, BMW, SUZUKI, HONDA, YAMAHA, etc etc.. and welcome ALL Riders on ANY brand of motorcycle.
 
Our Motorcycle Road tours are divided into 3 Grades and within each Grade there are 3 Levels.
 
MODERATE (green): Levels 1-3
You have experience riding your motorcycle multiple days.
 
 
DIFFICULT (blue): Levels 4-6
You are an experienced rider and confident riding your own motorcycle over several days with some long mileage days.
 
 
CHALLENGING (red): Levels 7-9
You are an experienced rider and confident riding your own motorcycle (with luggage) on tarmac over several days with some long mileage days. You are accustomed to riding in hot, cold, windy conditions.
 

GRADING SCHEME - Cycle ROAD

Our Cycle ROAD Tours are divided into 3 Grades and within each Grade there are 3 Levels.
 
MODERATE (green): Levels 1-3
20-40 miles (32-64 kms) per day on surfaced roads
Average ride time 3-5 hours
Undulating terrain, several easy hills
 
 
DIFFICULT (blue): Levels 4-6
30-50 miles (48-50 kms) per day on surfaced roads
Average ride time 4-6 hours
Generally hilly terrain
Several short, steep ascents/descents
 
 
CHALLENGING (red): Levels 7-9
50-70 miles (80-112 kms) per day on surfaced roads
Average ride time 5-7 hours
Long ascents/descents
Some can be at altitude
